An e-mail to the President and Chief Election Commissioner

To
Mr. BB Tandon,
The Chief Election Commissioner of India.

Copy to,
The President of India

Respected Sir,

It has become a common practice (atleast in Tamilnadu) for every party to promise anything they feel like (free land, free colour tv, waiver of all agri loans, 4 grams of gold and what not). I dont think most of them or in fact any of them is going to be feasible to implement.

These promises amount to nothing but official bribery for the poor and illiterate, but only in this case the bribe is promised but not delivered.

The Election commission should mandate that the political parties should register their manifesto as a legal affidavit with the election commission. They should be allowed to promise only what they have written in their manifesto.

And once they come to power, the election commission should review the affidavit (manifesto) after an year or so. If concrete steps have not been taken for each items promised in the affidavit (manifesto), the government should be held responsible and answerable. Any affected citizen should be able to file a Public Interest Litigation(PIL) on the government and seek justice about the items that had been promised to him/her.

This way the parties will hesitate to give huge false promises as they will have to really fulfil them.

Sir, you are in a position to take tough decisions which stop this unhealthy practice of luring the poor and illiterate people into voting for someone just in hope of getting some freebies. Please give a thought to the idea proposed above.

Regards,
Shankar Anand.

you were the people once ridiculed the mid day rice meal program and now every state is following it. Our colour TV will help the rural youths to be aware of the social and scientific issues and a new revolution may happen and many more state will follow. For a poor women 4g gold is a great gift a socially responsible govt can do for her. Tamilnadu is a bit revolutionary state and you will never understand and that is why we quote it in every topic of discussion from reservation to merit to social upliftment to all caste priests in Temples. Wait and see!
